Owner Dan McGatha

Dan has a long history of sport fishing encompassing saltwater fishing from shore, surf, near shore and offshore as well as freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds. Dan began a lifelong commitment to fishing about the time he began to walk. He has had many fishing strategies passed down to him from his father who is also an avid fisherman. Dan grew up in a military family, which gave him a great opportunity to travel and fish many wonderful places in the world such as Barbados WI, Scotland, India, and Thailand to name a few. Dan joined the Navy in 1979 and continued his travels and fishing adventures. After leaving the Navy in 1988 Dan went back to sea in 1991 with the US Merchant fleet and then on to Commercial Fishing Fleet in Alaska and presently the Gas and Oil Industry where he continues to travel and fish all over the world.

He has fished the local waters around Phuket for the last six years. Dan started fishing locally for his own enjoyment. He then began providing a guide service, to provide thrilling, enjoyable fishing experiences to others. Now he is providing excellent and exciting fishing adventures for clients and friends from around the world with his THAIONEON Fishing Charters. The “THAIONEON” is Dan’s latest boat. She is “rigged out” for the ultimate saltwater sport fishing experience. Dan insists on providing the best sport fishing adventure he can to his clients and friends. As a member of the IGFA Dan passionately supports and practices “catch and release” of all billfish. Dan also practices conservation, by harvesting only what is needed and releasing the rest for future generations of sport fishermen to enjoy. Dan is very keen on protecting the environment making sure nothing goes over the side of the boat that did not come from the sea or is not biodegradable. As Owner / Operator of THAIONEON Fishing Charters he has a profound knowledge of every aspect associated with the Boat, Equipment, Rigging, Tackle, and the Local Waters.

Captain Dam

Captain Dam is originally from the province of Krabi, Thailand. Dam and his family have lived on Phuket for eleven years now. Captain Dam has fished the local waters around Phuket for the last nine years and is very conversant with the movements of the water as well as his knowledge of the subsea fish holding structures and habitats. Dam acquired his Captains License in 2003. Captain Dam is a superior boat operator and Captain always in total control of his boat. Captain Dam puts the Safety of the Clients, Crew, and Boat as his Top Priority when operating the boat. His meticulous observations of both the sea and sky provide him with the clues needed to find the more elusive big game fish. Captain Dam takes great pride in providing the very best sport fishing experience he can to our valued clients and friends. Dam speaks some English but always wears a smile and is happy to help in any way he can. Dam possesses an impressive knowledge of all of the equipment and gear on the boat and is highly accomplished when it comes to rigging baits and various methods of bait presentation.
Captain Dam also has an extraordinary sport fishing knowledge of the areas near and around the Similan Islands West / North West of Phuket.

Deck Hand Harry

Our Deck Hand Harry is a remarkable young man. Harry is also from the province of Krabi, Thailand. In 2003 Harry re-located and now resides here on Phuket. He is a very keen Deck Hand relentlessly observing every movement on the back deck from the lines, rods, and teasers to simultaneously monitoring every movement of the crew and clients while catering to their every need. He also keeps a sharp eye on the waters surrounding the boat as well as the sky constantly scanning for clues that might lead to an exciting and thrilling bout between angler and big game fish. Harry is very skilled at rigging baits, setting out lines and keeping the back deck operations running smoothly. From time to time Harry steps in and pilots the boat giving the captain a needed break. Harry’s skills in handling the boat are exceptional. In the near future Harry will make an excellent Captain himself. Not only does Harry posse a keen and colossal knowledge of the fishing waters local to Phuket but he also has an exceptional knowledge of the Phang Nga area. Harry can speak good English and is very helpful to our clients. Harry has a very warm and friendly smile complementing his helpful and cheerful character.
